South Highlands Middle School, nestled in the heart of Union Springs, Alabama, serves students in grades 5 through 8 and is proud to educate a vibrant and resilient student body of 424 learners. With a minority enrollment of 99% and 81% of students identified as economically disadvantaged, the school stands as a beacon of opportunity and equity in a rural setting.

At South Highlands, every challenge is viewed as a stepping stone toward greater achievement. The school is actively working to improve academic outcomes, with a strong focus on literacy and numeracy. Currently, 19% of students demonstrate proficiency in reading, and 2% in math—figures that are driving a renewed focus on instructional excellence and student support.

The dedicated staff includes 21 full-time teachers and a full-time school counselor, all committed to nurturing the academic, social, and emotional growth of each student. With a student-teacher ratio of 20:1, the school is focused on strengthening classroom instruction and fostering deeper connections between students and educators.
